Ivan Kotek, Funzionano, presented the company’s silicon-containing POSS (polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane) PIN FRs, see presentation at the previous AMI FRiP conference in pinfa Newsletter n°124. These highly-branched organo-mineral nano-polymers are free of any hazard labelling and, used at 0.6% – 3% loading in combination with other PIN FRs, can improve fire performance or replace e.g. halogenated FRs or ATO thermosets, thermoplastics, PVC, polypropylene, polyurethane foam, etc. Funzionano states that the reactive groups on the POSS ensure polymer compatibility and effective mixing and dispersion, and then combine into polymers as a reactive PIN FR. The mode of action is by contributing to char layer formation.
